GOEVND

TSAGHKADZORI

Qochari is the most widespread and best preserved Armenian dance. The root “qoch” which most likely has to do with non-gelded sheep called “goch, ghoch, qoch”, comes from ancient times and is connected with Ekho’s cult. This favorite dance is very attractive with its picturesque vividness and masculine dynamics. Though nowadays the dancers do not remember its association with the sheep, the time and later stratification have not quite refined its initial form.

“Qochari” has clearly preserved the character of the ancient movements, the jumping and bouncing, the fight, the butting of the rams and goats. The imitation of the movements is vividly expressed in forward attacking movements and the transfer of weight support, which seem to express a wish to butt the rival.
